Concrete has served people as a construction material for thousands of years. Since 3000 BC the Egyptians were using gypsum and lime for mortar to construct the pyramids. Later, around 300 BC – 500 AD, the romans came up with a material that is incredibly close to the concrete we use today. The romans used the material to construct architectural marvels such as the Colosseum and the Pantheon to name a few. They even went as far as experimenting with different admixtures to make their concrete more resilient in specific applications.
For example, horse blood was used to combat frost. Horse hair was their equivalent of fiber, and volcanic ash was added to help the concrete set underwater. From the Colosseum to a city sidewalk, concrete is still an integral part of construction as we know it today. And while science and testing history have moved us away from horse hair and blood, we are still unfortunately posed with challenges when we work with concrete – especially in the midwest.
